Quantum Break for PC performs better with DirectX 11, not 12
When it comes to technology, shouldn't "new" mean improved? Not necessarily, at least when it comes to Quantum Break and DirectX. When the game's PC version first launched on the Windows Store, it used the DirectX 12 API and ended up containing a huge list of bugs and performance issues. But last Thursday, Quantum Break's Steam edition launched under DirectX 11 and the experience has noticeably improved.
The full report arrives courtesy of Eurogamer, and makes a fairly strong case for DirectX 11's superior performance. While resolution and visual effects themselves are identical between versions, the Steam edition has measurably higher frame rates on Nvidia graphics cards, jumping from 33 to 44.7 on the GTX 970 and 39.5 to 47.5 on the GTX 1060. The tested AMD card, meanwhile, shows no change.
Now obviously that's still far from the 60fps many PC gamers would prefer, but overall it's a fairly significant improvement. And perhaps it shouldn't be surprising, given Remedy's comfort with DirectX 11 or that the developer has distanced itself from Quantum Break's Windows 10 support. The question is how this will apply to Microsoft's future games as the publisher heavily promotes its Windows 10 and DirectX 12 platforms.
