How the Steam Summer Sale works

One of Steam's annual mega-sales is here: the Steam Summer Sale. Valve never announces dates for its various sales, but they always leak.

This year was no exception. An anonymous developer recently leaked the starting and end dates for this year's summer sale. Paypal followed it afterwards, confirming that today, June 23 is when the Steam Summer Sale 2016 starts. The Summer Sale ends Monday, July 4.

The format of the Steam Sales has changed in recent years from the old model to a better, more streamlined one. Previously, some games would essentially have two sale prices (two discount values), a regular one displayed all sale-long, and another one that appears only when that game gets featured on the front page - as part of a daily deal.

For that reason, it was always advised to only buy games when they're part of daily deals. Unless it's the last day and your game hasn't been featured throughout, only then should you buy it, knowing this price is the lowest it could be.

The new Steam Sale format is clearer, and games now drop to a price that won't change until the end of the sale. The front page still features deals every few hours, but it merely curates the deals already available without dropping the prices even further.

Every Steam Sale also comes with its own meta-game most of the time. Usually, browsing through Your Queue earns you cards, which you can use to raise your Steam Account level or trade for gems or money through the Community Market.

If you want to top-up your Steam Wallet, Best Buy is currently offering 20 percent off on the second card when you buy two cards of the same value.
