Nintendo and Yacht Club have announced that the Shovel Knight amiibo, one of the few amiibos for non-Nintendo properties, is coming out December 11 in Europe, and January 8 in North America. The reason for the delay in North America is due to the developer choosing to wait and ship a good number of them, rather than ship a small one before Christmas.

The studio also recommended not importing and holding off until the amiibo is released in your region, because it won't work across regions.

On either the Wii U or 3DS, scanning the amiibo on the level map screen unlocks a custom knight with more customisation options. In addition, on Wii U, you can scan your amiibo to join a friend in co-op, including two custom knights or any other combination.

The game's Challenge Mode also gets new content when you scan the amiibo. Namely, exclusive stages that take advantage of the custom knight's abilities, as well as ten new challenges, five solo and five others for co-op.

The Shovel Knight amiibo is priced $12.99, £10.99, and €14,99.
