Titanfall, Call of Duty creative Zampella founds new mobile studio
Infinity Ward and Respawn Entertainment founder Vince Zampella has opened a new studio called Nuclear Division.
The Titanfall and Call of Duty creator has teamed up with Larry Pacey, formerly of slot machine maker WMS, to found the mobile start-up.
Speaking to VentureBeat, the pair said they hope to use the company to test new ideas.
It's "silly to ignore" mobile, Zampella said of the decision, but Respawn isn't suited to experiment with the platform. Instead, Zampella hopes to take whatever he learns at Nuclear Division back to Respawn.
Nuclear Division has a platform and a couple of games in the works, but isn't ready to give details. Its first release is expected within a few years.
Zampella will not be giving up his job at Respawn, as his Nuclear Division role will be less intensive and more advisory. The two companies will be neighbours in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles.
Nuclear Division currently employs less than 12 staff but expects to top out at about 50.
“If you look at where we came from, developing games with small teams, this is the way to get back to that. You can get back to the core of what matters to you and the values of what makes a game great," Zampella said.
Zampella has a great track record with starting new teams. With his former business partner Jason West, he started Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward and Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment, both of which have gone on to massive success.
Thanks, Polygon.
