GTA 5: viral promo begins, live-action ad inbound

Grand Theft Auto 5 is so important that even its marketing proves endlessly fascinating. Just look at this whacked-out stuff from one of the franchise's viral promotional sources, and get excited about an upcoming commercial designed to get you excited.

As with the last few Grand Theft Auto releases, Rockstar has begun its AR-style viral advertising, which usually includes websites, trailers and sometimes even real world interactivity like phone hotlines.

The long-dormant Epsilon Program Twitter, which series fans are likely already familiar with, has begun updating again. The feed claimed its silence - which stretches back to November - was related to a court case, which is has won (so it will be suing someone shortly).

It then linked to a screensaver download hosted on a Rockstar site called Kifflom. Check it out for yourself, or just watch the video below; some users claim it hides in-game footage somehow.

The Twitter feed has promised that users will be able to visit an "Enlightenment Centre" and said directions will be provided in one week.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest Rockstar has been shooting a new live action commercial for Grand Theft Auto 5 in Mexico. One Reddit user shared a number of photos of the alleged shoot, which shows a GTA V logo as part of a crash scene.

"The guy in the suit of the last photo exits the totaled car while talking to the camera; as he makes his way out, the car explodes and he walks by the car under the trees while some other effects are set behind him," the poster explained.

The images were deleted from Imgur but Dark Zero has mirrored them.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is headed to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September.
