Castle of Illusion remake due in northern summer
Confirming weeks of leaks and teases, Sega has announced a PC and console release for a new version of Castle of Illusion featuring Mickey Mouse.
Described as "a complete re-imagining" of the 1990 Mega Drive (that's Genesis, Americans) title, the remake will hit PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in northern summer. It's been "completely rebuilt from the ground up", apparently, with as-yet unrevealed new gameplay mechanics. Saving would be nice. Did you know it's impossible to finish the Game Gear version on a standard battery pack?
Fondly remembered for its delightful graphics and audio, as well as solid gameplay at a time when billions of dire platforming clones made you want to throw your console under a bus, Castle of Illusion has Mickey saving Minnie from the evil witch, Mizrabel.
“The original Castle of Illusion was tremendously entertaining and has a well-deserved reputation as a Sega classic. Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse brings this great game to a new generation,” said Sega America digital business VP Chris Olson. “Mickey is back and he looks fantastic.” Is he? Interestingly, the game was developed by Sega Studios Australia, which will close later this year. What a swansong, eh?
