God of War creator describes Ascension as "impeccably executed"

Franchise creator David Jaffe is impressed with the latest entry in the God of War series.

Jaffe has seen a little of the game behind the scenes at Sony Santa Monica, his former workplace.

"I think it looks cool. It looks like another great, impeccably executed Sony Santa Monica game," he told IGN.

Regarding the game's controversial multiplayer inclusion, Jaffe seems quite positive, asking doubters to give it the benefit of the doubt until they have reason not to.

"Sony Santa Monica, and certainly that team, really hasn't done anything ever to let people down as game developers," he said.

"If it turns out to be the case that the single player is watered down because of it, then I think they have some justification. But I don't see any evidence of that, and I don't see evidence of that based on the team they are."

Jaffe himself once considered adding multiplayer to the series, but instead of a separate multiplayer mode, he considered some kind of co-operative adventure. Unfortunately, Kratos isn't a natural co-operator; the "one man army" doesn't have any particular weaknesses, and would have been accompanied by someone he did not need.

"There were moments where I was being a total idiot, and it was a Red Sonja version of Kratos," Jaffe said of this aborted scheme.

"It was kind of like a hyper-violent, screwball comedy where they hated each other but they had to work together - which is totally stupid."

Delightful. God of War: Ascension is due exclusively on PlayStation 3 next northern spring, and is the second in the series made without Jaffe's input after God of War III.
