Rumour: Monolith on The Hobbit movie tie-in

Developers of F.E.A.R. and Gotham City Imposters Monolith are working on a game based on Peter Jackson's upcoming film based on The Hobbit.

Twitter-based secret-smasher Superannuation tweeted about the development, going into detail about who was on what at Warner. He's got a particularly impressive track record at digging up details and getting this kind of thing right.

"As to what Monolith/Warner Bros. Games Seattle is up to now - pretty sure it is a little fantasy action RPG-lite called The Hobbit: Part One," he tweeted.

"Snowblind basically no longer exists, so WB Games Seattle is more or less Monolith and some other dev support/publishing staff and whatnot. It also sounds like WB Seattle will be handling the tie-in for the second Hobbit film."

A Hobbit movie tie-in title was previously said to be on the cards back in October 2011. The film is out in December and any game would likely launch alongside it.

Snowblind was the developer of the previous Lord of the Rings title from Warner Bros, War in the North. It was met with a tepid reception critically and commercially. Monolith's Gotham City impostors performed well on Xbox Live Arcade, though.

Superannuation also pointed to beta screenshots from a cancelled Monolith game that strongly resemble Gotham City. It was previously rumoured that Monolith were attempting to get a Batman project off the ground - it's safe to assume that is now cancelled.
