Developers cancelling Vita games for 3DS report "largely exaggerated," says Sony

A report claiming that Japanese developers are cancelling games bound for PlayStation Vita to instead work on Nintendo 3DS is "largely exaggerated," Sony Worldwide Studios US boss Scott Rhode has said.

It follows sales of the device being on the downward since it launched in the country back in December, a continuing trend as of last night, though some small consolation may come in the form of Vita title Gravity Daze being the second highest title n the recent Japanese charts.

It comes as a Nikkei report, penned by the head of IGDA Japan, mentioned a quote from an anonymous source that said "major Japanese companies are canceling all projects intended for Vita and are changing development to the 3DS."

But speaking with Gamsutra ahead of the portable's western launch next week, Rhode has said he feels this isn't the case, saying "many, many" third-party developers are working on titles for the system in the foreseeable future.

"I did not see that quote, but you see extremist quotes like that all the time," he said. "I mean, obviously, there is no way anyone could stand in front of a camera and say that all developers are changing focus from one platform to another, no matter what it is."

He continued: "I know many, many, many third party developers and publishers are feverishly working on Vita titles, not just for now, but for the foreseeable future.

"You can, whatever -- rewind two years ago. Every developer was you knew was selling -- going towards -- I was going to say 'selling their soul', it almost came out -- to go build games for Zynga and the Facebook platform. And there's another time when you see everyone is going to do smaller iPad games, or iOS games in general.

"Then it was PS3, it was 360, it's Vita, it's 3ds. It's always, constantly changing. It's not something that concerns me whatsoever."

PlayStation Vita launches next Wednesday in Europe and the US.
