Microsoft Q2: Xbox platform revenue up 9%

Microsoft has posted a 5% year-on-year increase in revenue for the quarter ending December 31, 2011, with strong performance from the Xbox 360 division.

Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices division, which governs its gaming endeavours among other product lines, posted revenue of $4.24 billion, a 15% increase on 2010's $3.69 billion.

Xbox 360 platform revenue grew by 9% year-on-year, a jump of $322, which Microsoft attributed to strong hardware sales. As revealed at CES 2012, the Xbox 360 install base has passed 66 million, with 18 million Kinect units sold, and Xbox LIVE's current membership of 40 million is a 33% increase on 2010.

“In addition to the continued strength of our commercial business, this holiday season was the strongest in Microsoft history, thanks to good sales execution and compelling products like Xbox 360 and Kinect,” said COO Kevin Turner.

Overall, Microsoft reported quarterly revenue of $20.89 billion.
