Sucker Punch unveils inFamous 2's player creation suite

Sucker Punch's "big secret" has come to light - inFamous 2 is to sport a suite of user-generated content tools. Get inside for shots and video.

Joystiq reports the tools, which allow users to create custom maps and share them, will go into public beta in April.

Details on how to join the beta will be released on March 14 through inFamous 2's official website.

In a post on the US PS Blog, development director Chris Zimmerman elaborated.

"We thought inFAMOUS 2 would be better if it didn’t end—if you never ran out of missions and mini-missions to play and things to do. So… we spent the last two years adding a User-Generated Content feature to the game," he said.

Users creating missions will have access to all the game's characters, props and enemies, allowing vanilla inFamous builds, but will also have the ability to make entirely different mission types.

"Wish [inFamous 2] had pure stealth missions? No problem, you can create stealth missions.

"Looking for more of a challenge? Try taking away some of Cole’s powers—see how the player does facing a platoon of Militia wielding only his Amp.

"Or add an old-school platforming challenge, or a race, or… I could go on all day. ... Skeet shooting? No problem. Disc golf? Assuming you’re happy tossing around cars instead of Frisbees, sure. How about a mission where Zeke just tells you bad jokes until you shoot him? Um, yeah, you can do that, too."

User-generated missions will appear in-game as they are created in the same way standard missions do, while popular and highly-rated missions will be featured by Sucker Punch and pushed out to all players.

With the addition of the new tool suite, Sony has folded inFamous 2 into the Play, Create, Share label, alongside LittleBigPlanet and ModNation Racers.

The tease

Sucker Punch had earlier teased a "big" announcement, with general chatter suggesting it could be inFamous 2-related, in a Facebook status message.

"Today is very exciting day. We've been holding a big secret for the last two years and at GDC later today... We get to tell you all about it."

Fans hoped for an official reveal of Sly 4, but Sucker Punch burst that bubble immediately.

"OK. Everyone, no, a Sly 4 announcement is not the secret. Sorry to disappoint some," a rep added in the comments.
