More than 30 million Steam accounts have now been created, Valve has just said, with user-growth up 178 percent in the last 12 months.

Over 1,200 games are now offered by the service.

Peak simultaneous player numbers are now over 3 million, with over 6 million "unique gamers" accessing Steam each day.

Valve also said that Steam sales have increased by more than 200 percent in the past year, putting it on track for a sixth straight year of over 100 percent year-over-year growth in unit sales.

"To meet this demand, the Steam infrastructure has been increased and now has ability to run at 400Gps, enough bandwidth to ship a digitized version of the Oxford English Dictionary 92.6 times per second," said the company in a release.

Steam Cloud, introduced in spring 2008, has surpassed the 100 million files saved milestone.
